I figure magic is a dominant trait, 'cause that would explain why you see a higher percentage of squibs in pureblood families that get really inbred and stuff, and also how you can have Muggleborns and such.

Punnett squares are a Muggle science thing – they use them to explain genetics and stuff. So, say the trait for magic is M and the trait for no-magic is m. Each parent as two magic-related genes, and when they pass on genetic material to their kid, they each contribute one gene. So say you have a woman who's Mm who has a kid with a man who's also Mm - you can use a Punnet square to figure out what the chance of their child having magic is, like so:

This shows that there's a 75% chance of the kid having magic, since M is a dominant trait, which means that anyone who has M will have magic, even if they only have one. What's happening with all this inbreeding is that the number of witches and wizards that are Mm are increasing and the number that are MM are decreasing. The more Mm you have, the higher chance of having a mm (a squib) turning up.

Only, of course, there's more than just two genes for magic, cause there are all these extra ones that also determine magical strength and such. And squibs can also be the result of a mutation, so two MM parents could actually produce a mm kid, though it's not that likely. Mutations are why there are Muggleborns also - they're Mm or MM kids that were born to mm parents as the result of a mutation. The only reason that more people are born with magic in the wizarding world than in the Muggle world is that there's a higher percentage of people carrying the M gene and reproducing with other people carrying the M gene so overall they've a higher likelihood of producing a child carrying the M gene.

See, it's all about Punnett squares! At least when it comes to the genetic aspect - I can't even begin to understand the political and social aspects of the whole thing, they're much too confusing for me.

Who: Ruth Ann, Derek
When: 6 years in the future, so 2012
Where: Ministry cafeteria
What: Crackthread just because!

The life of a brilliant Ministry lackey was not an easy one, Ruth Ann decided as she wandered into the cafeteria in search of food. It probably didn't help very much that she was prone to causing chaos on a regular basis, though she did think it was kinda cool that she was single-handedly responsible for the fact that her immediate superior now had mild panic attacks whenever he caught sight of a rubber chicken. He'd stated on more than one occasion that the creation of exploding chickens was not appropriate behaviour for members of the Department of Mysteries (who knew? Certainly not Ruth Ann!), though he'd yet to actually do anything about it. It probably helped that he now developed an inexplicable rash whenever he came within twenty feet of her. And that, being half-way through cataloging all the grimoires in the Department's (rather impressive) collection, she was currently the only one who actually knew where anything was.

Also, it was always a good idea to stay on the good side of the person who spent her days around several thousand books which all contained rather powerful and dangerous spells.

So, lunch.

Who: Ruth Ann, David
When: like... seven years in the future, so 2013
Where: Diagon Alley
What: Crackthread because we're bored! :D

The life of a brilliant Ministry lackey wasn't an easy one. Particularly when one had an idiot for a boss and a penchants for creating rubber chickens that exploded rather gloriously (apparently this was inappropriate behaviour for members of the Department of Mysteries? Who knew!). Of course, sometimes exploding rubber chickens were exactly what the situation called for, as they resulted in rather terrified bosses who willing to agree that yes, it had been a rather stressful day, and wouldn't she like to take lunch a bit early?

And Ruth Ann was quite sure that by lunch said boss had meant treating herself to a rather glorious sundae at Florean Fortescue's. Because he was considerate like that. Thus the reason for her strolling down Diagon Alley, intent on the acquisition of a cold and tasty treat.
